Cat Declawing: Inhumanity or Necessity?
For centuries, human race loves to decorate and beautify hands and toenails. Throughout the history, pedicure and manicure have been so popular among royalty, nobility and elite society. It is very good for the human to take care of healthy and beautiful nails. But it is different for feline because claws are naturally needed and they don’t need to show off one another.
Actually, it is not just easily ended by cutting with nail clipper like the human does. Some people state it is one of the things that you should not do on kitty while some others support to declaw as a needed thing, alas.it is a serious debate which never ends in past, present, and future.Well, at least pets can say out loud for their right. So here I am going to clarify about declawing and also both side effects and good sides because I don’t want to describe with a one-sided view for my dear crazy cat lovers as they have right to decide what is best they believe in acting on their furry friends.
1.What is declawing actually?
Declawing is known as Onychectomy in the clinical term, kind of surgical procedure, is done on cats to eradicate unneeded scratching and for another medical problem. Our feline friends’ claws are not like human nails. They are attached to the bone of the first joint of kitty’s toes. Therefore when a kitty is declawed, entire first joint bone has to be amputated. It’s kind of painful for that reason, experienced veterinarians use safe anesthetic correctly. But it really takes some time to heal depending on the age of the cat. Some countries do not approve declawing as the legal statement through the action of Onychectomy is still being applied by law or without law in some countries.
For example in South East Asia and India, cat owners in rural areas still using nail clippers to cut the claws off and mostly lack pieces of knowledge about pet caring facts. There are two common types of clinical declawing surgeries nowadays. Scalpel or a clipper to remove the first toe bone in traditional methods. The second one is laser procedure and it decreases pain and bleeding than the traditional way. When a cat is declawed, proper caring with veterinarian’s advice is essential in recovering processes.Bandages need to be clean and keep on eyes not to step on dirty places.
Remove the litter box sand and replace with shredded clothes and papers to prevent sand particles entering the tissues. There may also be some outcome symptoms after surgery such as hemorrhage, infection, swollen paws, incapable of walking properly and of course severe pain. Usually, vets suggest appropriate medicines for fast healing, reduce pain and to avoid infectious germs or parasites. Therefore you have to consider yourself that you can be taking care of declawed cat properly after surgery.
2.Advantages and Disadvantages of declawing
By universal law, every action brings good and bad outcome. Most people against declawing as a supreme cruelty as they have their own reasons. Mother nature makes the feline race to bite, to scratch for hunting, for playing and for defense.Being declawed is like being pushed in front of a dragon without any weapons. If kitty was being chased by the savage dog, claws are vital defensive system given by nature. Claws are not only for protection but also for their own behavior. Of course, cats scratch for pleasure, for marking their regions, for exercising their muscle and as own stress relief therapy. You can’t blame on your kitty’s by born genetically pattern for destroying curtain and sofa.
Sometimes furry friends love to scratch their human as symbol of love and pleasure unless you are hurting them.
Walking problem always occurs after declawing because cats walk normally on tiptoe and those twinkle toes are in pain even with a bandage. As the result, a declawed cat has to depend on hind limbs that can cause excessive pressure on hind toes leads to an imbalance in walking and incapable of jumping or playing around.
Another one is litter box problem as surgery makes them into pain when they are trying to litter box. So they may toilet on your favorite bed or on the settee. There is a serious problem even it is not common. If a cat is declawed by inappropriate procedure, the claw can grow back in malformation and this is so serious and lifetime pain eventually. For that reason, you should take a proper suggestion from a knowledgeable veterinarian.
Now it’s about some benefits of onychectomy. Due to declawing, you can have your curtains, couch, and other precious fabric items free from scratching.Furthermore, feline’s claws can be infected by fungus, can be injured in many cases, also can be in tumor hence Declawing is medically needed in those condition for the sake of fur babies then they will be saved. As cat parents, you can’t be blamed for wanting your kitty’s soft paw touching on face and body instead of sudden love scratch.
Yes, declawed kittens cant give surprise attack on face except for a pair of sweet fluffy paws with jelly bean toes.It is kind of safe for infants and babies from an aggressive attack. Cats’ paws touch everywhere, on the ground, on the floor, on the sand and they can’t wash their paws like humans thus a variety of gems, parasite eggs, fungus spores are hiding in claws. These are an invisible danger to unlucky owners and can probably be infected just by playful scratch through our bloodstream that can cause diseases in humans. Therefore, it is entirely up to you to decide to declaw or not to declaw for feline friends.
As far as I know most of the people against declawing as they believe it’s kind of mutilation. Many of western countries prohibit this surgery by law. Some vets avoid to do this procedure even they are being asked legally. You may have a problem that you want to declaw your cat but the law and vet denied, or you wish to let the cat be the cat but also have tension about beautiful sofa and children.
There are some alternative options you can do without declawing.First is nail trimming and this is not cutting whole claw. Nail trimming for the feline is just to remove hook edge of claw so their claws still remain to play but less damage capacity. This clipping should be performed one to two times per month regularly depend on how fast kitty’s claws can grow back. But be careful while you are clipping because cats are so active for that the better way is to clip in a catnap.
Moreover, trimmed claws can also be covered with a vain nail caps called soft paw. They are glued on trimmed nails to prevent damage from scratching on furniture entirely yet furry friends can still exercise regularly. These caps are colorful and fashionable. Only a few things to be careful not to glue two nails as one, follow the given instructions and to replace the caps last about one month.
There are many photos of cute kittens playing with scratching posts. Aren’t they adorable? There are lots of cat trees and scratches in different designs in pets stores though you can also buy online.Just need a little time to train after buying, your cats will love it.If you have any troubles to buy one, no need to worry because there are practically good instructed videos of making a DIY scratching post on the internet. So you can make one in the home by using wood, carpet or ropes without spending too much cash. Training your cat to scratch on appropriate place needs patience and time.Never force or beat them to train. It is Ok to use water gun filled with warm water. Baby kittens are easier to guide but the older the cat, the more time and endurance it takes.Hope you can make the best choice for the goodness of beloved meow cat family.
